Westover is a city located in Monongalia County, West Virginia. It is part of the Morgantown, WV Metropolitan Statistical Area. The population was 4,845 at the 2010 census.

History

Westover was founded in 1891 by the West Virginia Central and Pittsburgh Railway. The city was named after the nearby Westover Plantation, which was owned by the prominent local family of the same name. The city was incorporated in 1895.

Geography

Westover is located at 39°37'17" North, 79°59'45" West (39.6214, -79.9958). According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 1.2 square miles (3.1 km2), all of it land.

Economy

Westover is home to several businesses, including a Walmart Supercenter, a Lowe's Home Improvement store, and a variety of restaurants and retail stores. The city is also home to several industrial and manufacturing companies, including a steel mill and a paper mill.

Demographics

As of the census of 2010, there were 4,845 people, 2,072 households, and 1,269 families residing in the city. The population density was 4,037.5 people per square mile (1,561.2/km2). There were 2,307 housing units at an average density of 1,922.5 per square mile (741.2/km2). The racial makeup of the city was 94.2% White, 2.2% African American, 0.2% Native American, 0.7% Asian, 0.1% Pacific Islander, 0.7% from other races, and 1.9% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 1.7% of the population.
There were 2,072 households, out of which 28.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 43.2% were married couples living together, 14.2% had a female householder with no husband present, and 37.7% were non-families. 32.2% of all households were made up of individuals, and 13.2% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.31 and the average family size was 2.91.
In the city, the population was spread out, with 23.2% under the age of 18, 8.2% from 18 to 24, 28.2% from 25 to 44, 24.2% from 45 to 64, and 16.2% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 38 years. For every 100 females, there were 91.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 87.2 males.
