Wayne Summary

Wayne, West Virginia is a small town located in the southwestern part of the state, in Wayne County. It is situated along the banks of the Big Sandy River, and is the county seat of Wayne County. The town has a population of 1,845 as of the 2010 census, and is part of the Huntington-Ashland Metropolitan Statistical Area.

History

Wayne was founded in 1842, and was named after General “Mad” Anthony Wayne, a Revolutionary War hero. The town was originally a trading post, and was the first county seat of Wayne County. The town was incorporated in 1881, and the first courthouse was built in 1883.
The town was a major hub for the coal industry in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. The town was home to several coal mines, and the coal industry was the main source of employment for the town’s residents. The town was also home to several other industries, including a brickyard, a sawmill, and a furniture factory.

Wayne is located at 38°20'N 82°37'W (38.33, -82.62). The town is situated along the banks of the Big Sandy River, and is located in the Appalachian Mountains. The town is located in a valley, and is surrounded by hills and mountains. The town is located in a humid subtropical climate zone, and has hot, humid summers and mild winters.
