War Summary

War, West Virginia is a small town located in McDowell County in the Appalachian Mountains of the United States. It is situated along the Tug Fork River, which forms the border between West Virginia and Kentucky. The town was founded in 1891 and was named after the nearby War Creek. As of the 2010 census, the population of War was 1,786.

Geography

War is located at 37°25'25" North, 81°37'45" West (37.423, -81.629). According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 0.9 square miles (2.3 km2), all of it land.

History

The area around War was first settled in the late 1700s by settlers from the eastern United States. The town was founded in 1891 and was named after the nearby War Creek. The town was incorporated in 1895.
In the early 1900s, War was a bustling coal mining town. The town was home to several coal mines, including the War Coal Company, the War Creek Coal Company, and the War Creek Coal and Coke Company. The town also had a number of stores, churches, and other businesses.
In the 1950s, the coal industry began to decline in the area and many of the mines closed. This led to a decline in the population of War. The population of the town dropped from a peak of 2,500 in 1950 to 1,786 in 2010.

As of the 2010 census, there were 1,786 people, 745 households, and 486 families residing in the town. The population density was 1,945.3 people per square mile (750.2/km2). There were 845 housing units at an average density of 922.2 per square mile (356.2/km2). The racial makeup of the town was 97.2% White, 0.7% African American, 0.2% Native American, 0.2% Asian, 0.1% Pacific Islander, 0.2% from other races, and 1.6% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 0.7% of the population.
There were 745 households, out of which 24.7% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 46.2% were married couples living together, 14.2% had a female householder with no husband present, and 35.2% were non-families. 32.2% of all households were made up of individuals, and 15.2% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.30 and the average family size was 2.88.
In the town, the population was spread out, with 21.2% under the age of 18, 8.2% from 18 to 24, 24.3% from 25 to 44, 27.2% from 45 to 64, and 19.1% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 42 years. For every 100 females, there were 87.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 83.2 males.
The median income for a household in the town was $20,938, and the median income for a family was $25,000. Males had a median income of $27,500 versus $17,500 for females. The per capita income for the town was $12,845.
