Parsons Summary

Parsons is a city located in Tucker County, West Virginia, United States. The population was 1,541 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Tucker County. Parsons is located along the Black Fork of the Cheat River.

History

Parsons was founded in 1856 by William Parsons, a local landowner. The town was incorporated in 1891. The town was named after William Parsons, who was a prominent landowner in the area.
The town was originally a small farming community, but it grew rapidly in the late 19th century due to the arrival of the railroad. The railroad allowed for the transportation of coal and timber, which were the main industries in the area.
The town was also home to a number of businesses, including a sawmill, a gristmill, a tannery, and a brickyard. The town also had a number of churches, including the Methodist Episcopal Church, the Presbyterian Church, and the Baptist Church.

Geography

Parsons is located at 39°10′17″N 79°25′17″W (39.171445, -79.421445). According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 0.9 square miles (2.3 km2), all of it land.

Economy

The economy of Parsons is largely based on the coal and timber industries. The town is home to several coal mines, as well as a number of timber companies. The town also has a number of small businesses, including restaurants, retail stores, and service providers.

Demographics

As of the census of 2010, there were 1,541 people, 645 households, and 393 families residing in the city. The population density was 1,717.2 people per square mile (664.2/km2). There were 717 housing units at an average density of 809.4 per square mile (312.7/km2). The racial makeup of the city was 97.2% White, 0.7% African American, 0.2% Native American, 0.2% Asian, 0.1% Pacific Islander, 0.2% from other races, and 1.6% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 0.7% of the population.
