Glenville Summary

Glenville is a town located in Gilmer County, West Virginia, United States. The population was 1,537 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Gilmer County.

History

Glenville was founded in 1810 by William Haymond, a Revolutionary War veteran. The town was named after his son, Glen Haymond. The town was incorporated in 1836.
In the late 19th century, Glenville was a major center of the timber industry. The town was also home to several coal mines. In the early 20th century, the town was a major center of the oil and gas industry.

Geography

Glenville is located at the confluence of the Little Kanawha and Little Kanawha Rivers. The town is situated in the Appalachian Mountains and is surrounded by rolling hills and forests.
