Gilbert, West Virginia is a small town located in Mingo County, in the southwestern part of the state. It is situated along the Tug Fork River, near the border of Kentucky. The town was founded in 1891 and was named after Gilbert Creek, which runs through the area. The population of Gilbert was 1,845 as of the 2010 census.

Geography

Gilbert is located at 37°41'25"N 82°14'45"W (37.690278, -82.245833). According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 1.2 square miles (3.1 km2), all of it land.
The town is located in the Appalachian Mountains, and is surrounded by hills and mountains. The highest point in the area is Big Sandy Mountain, which rises to an elevation of 2,845 feet (867 m). The Tug Fork River runs through the town, and is a popular spot for fishing and boating.

Economy

The economy of Gilbert is largely based on coal mining and timber harvesting. The town is home to several coal mines, including the Gilbert Mine, which is owned by the Alpha Natural Resources company. The town is also home to several timber companies, including the Gilbert Lumber Company.
In addition to these industries, Gilbert is home to several small businesses, including restaurants, convenience stores, and a few small shops. The town also has a few small manufacturing companies, including a furniture factory and a plastics factory.

Demographics

As of the 2010 census, there were 1,845 people, 745 households, and 486 families residing in the town. The population density was 1,539.2 people per square mile (593.7/km2). There were 845 housing units at an average density of 708.3 per square mile (273.7/km2). The racial makeup of the town was 97.2% White, 0.7% African American, 0.2% Native American, 0.2% Asian, 0.1% Pacific Islander, 0.2% from other races, and 1.6% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 0.7% of the population.
There were 745 households, out of which 28.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 44.2% were married couples living together, 15.2% had a female householder with no husband present, and 35.2% were non-families. 30.2% of all households were made up of individuals, and 14.2% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.45 and the average family size was 3.02.
In the town, the population was spread out, with 24.2% under the age of 18, 8.7% from 18 to 24, 27.2% from 25 to 44, 24.2% from 45 to 64, and 15.7% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 38 years. For every 100 females, there were 91.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 87.2 males.
