Fort Gay was originally known as "Mingo," and was established in 1817. The town was named after the nearby Fort Gay, which was built in 1790 by Colonel William Fleming and named after his friend, General James Gay. The fort was used to protect settlers from Native American attacks.

The economy of Fort Gay is largely based on coal mining and timber production. The town is also home to several small businesses, including a grocery store, a hardware store, and a restaurant.

As of the census of 2000, there were 545 people, 229 households, and 156 families residing in the town. The population density was 890.3 people per square mile (344.3/km2). There were 259 housing units at an average density of 425.2 per square mile (164.2/km2). The racial makeup of the town was 98.18% White, 0.37% African American, 0.18% Native American, 0.37% Asian, and 0.92% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 0.37% of the population.
