Dunbar Summary

Dunbar is a city located in Kanawha County, West Virginia, United States. The population was 8,162 at the 2010 census. It is the largest city in the county and is part of the Charleston, West Virginia Metropolitan Statistical Area.

History

The area that is now Dunbar was first settled in the late 1700s by a group of settlers from Pennsylvania. The town was originally known as "Cross Lanes" and was later renamed "Dunbar" in honor of the Scottish poet Robert Burns. The town was incorporated in 1891 and has since grown to become the largest city in Kanawha County.

Geography

Dunbar is located at 38°20'45" North, 81°37'45" West (38.3458, -81.6294). According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 4.2 square miles (10.8 km2), all of it land.

Economy

Dunbar is home to several large employers, including the DuPont plant, which produces nylon and other synthetic fibers. Other major employers include the West Virginia State University, the West Virginia Department of Transportation, and the West Virginia Department of Health and Human Resources.

Demographics

As of the census of 2010, there were 8,162 people, 3,541 households, and 2,092 families residing in the city. The population density was 1,945.2 people per square mile (750.2/km2). There were 3,945 housing units at an average density of 945.2 per square mile (364.7/km2). The racial makeup of the city was 92.2% White, 4.2% African American, 0.3% Native American, 0.7% Asian, 0.1% Pacific Islander, 0.7% from other races, and 1.9% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 1.7% of the population.
There were 3,541 households, out of which 25.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 39.2% were married couples living together, 15.3% had a female householder with no husband present, and 40.7% were non-families. 34.2% of all households were made up of individuals, and 14.2% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.27 and the average family size was 2.90.
In the city, the population was spread out, with 22.2% under the age of 18, 8.2% from 18 to 24, 27.2% from 25 to 44, 25.2% from 45 to 64, and 17.2% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 39 years. For every 100 females, there were 87.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 83.2 males.
The median income for a household in the city was $30,945, and the median income for a family was $37,917. Males had a median income of $31,945 versus $22,917 for females. The per capita income for the city was $17,845.
