Clendenin Summary

Clendenin is a town located in Kanawha County, West Virginia, United States. It is situated along the Elk River, approximately 25 miles northeast of Charleston, the state capital. The population was 1,919 at the 2010 census.

History

Clendenin was founded in 1817 by William Clendenin, a Revolutionary War veteran. The town was originally known as Clendenin's Landing, and was a major port on the Elk River. It was the site of the first steamboat to travel the Elk River, the "Elk". The town was incorporated in 1871.
In the late 19th century, Clendenin was a major coal mining center. The town was home to several coal mines, including the Clendenin Coal and Coke Company, which operated from 1891 to 1921. The town was also home to the Clendenin Glass Works, which operated from 1891 to 1910.

Geography

Clendenin is located at 38°25'45" North, 81°17'45" West (38.429167, -81.295833). According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 1.2 square miles, all of it land.

Economy

Clendenin's economy is largely based on the coal mining industry. The town is home to several coal mines, including the Clendenin Coal and Coke Company, which operates a surface mine in the area. The town is also home to several other businesses, including a lumber yard, a hardware store, and a grocery store.
