Benwood is a city located in Marshall County, West Virginia, United States. It is part of the Wheeling, West Virginia Metropolitan Statistical Area. The population was 1,811 at the 2010 census.

History

Benwood was founded in 1853 by the Benwood Iron Company, which was established to produce iron from the local ore deposits. The company was named after Benjamin Wood, a prominent local businessman. The town was incorporated in 1871.
Benwood was the site of a major steel mill, the Wheeling Steel Corporation, which was founded in 1901 and operated until the late 1980s. The mill was a major employer in the area and provided much of the economic base for the city.

The average household size was 2.41 and the average family size was 3.02.
In the city, the population was spread out, with 24.2% under the age of 18, 8.2% from 18 to 24, 27.2% from 25 to 44, 24.2% from 45 to 64, and 16.2% who were 65 years of age or older.
