Toa Alta Municipio Summary
Toa Alta Municipio is a municipality located in the northern part of Puerto Rico. It is part of the San Juan-Caguas-Guaynabo Metropolitan Statistical Area. As of the 2010 census, the municipality had a population of 39,709.
Geography
Toa Alta is located in the northern coast of Puerto Rico, north of Naranjito and Comerío; east of Bayamón; and west of Dorado and Vega Alta. The municipality is spread over 8 wards and Toa Alta Pueblo (the downtown area and the administrative center of the city). It is part of the San Juan-Caguas-Guaynabo Metropolitan Statistical Area.
The topography of Toa Alta is mostly flat with some rolling hills. The highest point is Cerro La Santa at 590 feet (180 m). The Río La Plata divides the municipality in two parts.
History
Toa Alta was founded in 1751 by Juan de Aponte. It was originally known as San Antonio de la Tuna de Toa. The name was changed to Toa Alta in 1802.
The municipality was part of the district of Bayamón until 1831, when it became an independent municipality.
Economy
The economy of Toa Alta is mainly based on agriculture and manufacturing. The main agricultural products are coffee, plantains, bananas, and sugar cane. The main industries are food processing, electronics, and textiles.
Demographics
As of the 2010 census, the population of Toa Alta was 39,709, with a population density of 1,092.7 people per square mile (422.2/km2). The racial makeup of the municipality was 79.2% White, 0.7% African American, 0.2% Native American, 0.3% Asian, 0.1% Pacific Islander, 17.3% from other races, and 2.4% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 97.2% of the population.
The median household income in Toa Alta was $17,845, and the median family income was $20,845. About 28.2% of the population was below the poverty line.

Toa Alta has a total of 15 public schools, including 8 elementary schools, 4 middle schools, and 3 high schools. There are also 3 private schools in the municipality.

Transportation
Toa Alta is served by the PR-2 highway, which runs east-west through the municipality. The PR-22 highway also runs through the municipality, connecting it to Bayamón and Dorado.
The municipality is served by the Toa Alta Station of the Tren Urbano, a light rail system that connects San Juan to Bayamón.
The Rafael Hernández Airport is located in Toa Alta. It is a general aviation airport used mainly for private and charter flights.
