History

The history of Manati Municipio dates back to the 16th century when it was first settled by the Taíno Indians. The Taíno Indians were the first inhabitants of the island of Puerto Rico and were known for their agricultural practices and fishing. The Taíno Indians were eventually displaced by the Spanish who arrived in the late 16th century. The Spanish established a settlement in Manati and named it San Antonio de la Tuna. The settlement was later renamed Manati after the Taíno word for “place of many waters”.
In the 19th century, Manati Municipio was part of the municipality of Vega Baja. In 1831, Manati was separated from Vega Baja and became its own municipality. During this time, Manati was a major producer of sugar cane and tobacco. In the late 19th century, Manati was also a major producer of coffee.
