Plainfield Summary
Plainfield is a town located in Sullivan County, New Hampshire, United States. The population was 1,717 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Claremont–Lebanon Micropolitan Statistical Area.
History
The area that is now Plainfield was first settled in 1764 by a group of settlers from Massachusetts. The town was incorporated in 1788 and named after Plainfield, Massachusetts. The town was originally a farming community, but by the mid-19th century, it had become a center for the production of woolen goods. The town also had several sawmills and gristmills.
Geography
Plainfield is located in the western part of Sullivan County, bordered by the towns of Unity to the north, Lempster to the east, Goshen to the south, and Cornish to the west. The town is situated in the Connecticut River Valley, with the Connecticut River forming the western boundary of the town. The highest point in the town is the summit of Mount Cardigan, at 2,907 feet (886 m) above sea level.
Economy
The economy of Plainfield is largely based on agriculture and tourism. The town is home to several small farms, which produce a variety of crops, including apples, potatoes, corn, and hay. The town also has several small businesses, including a general store, a hardware store, and a restaurant.
Tourism is an important part of the local economy. The town is home to several popular attractions, including the Plainfield Historical Society Museum, the Plainfield Covered Bridge, and the Plainfield Opera House. The town also hosts several annual events, including the Plainfield Fair and the Plainfield Pumpkin Festival.
