Amherst Summary
Amherst is a town located in Hillsborough County, New Hampshire, United States. The population was 11,201 at the 2010 census. Amherst is located in the southern part of the state, just north of Nashua and the Massachusetts border. It is part of the greater Manchester-Nashua metropolitan area.
History
The area that is now Amherst was first settled in 1733 by settlers from Massachusetts. The town was originally known as "Narragansett Number 3" and was part of the Massachusetts Bay Colony. In 1741, the town was incorporated as "Amherst" after the British general Lord Jeffrey Amherst.
In the 19th century, Amherst was a center of the woolen industry. The town was also home to several mills, including the Amherst Cotton Mill, which was built in 1845. The mill was destroyed by fire in 1877, but was rebuilt and continued to operate until the early 20th century.
Geography
Amherst is located at 42°51′N 71°30′W (42.845, -71.500). According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 24.2 square miles (62.6 km2), of which 24.1 square miles (62.4 km2) is land and 0.1 square miles (0.2 km2) is water, comprising 0.41% of the town.
