Yazoo City is a city located in Yazoo County, Mississippi, United States. It is the county seat of Yazoo County and the principal city of the Yazoo City Micropolitan Statistical Area, which is part of the larger Jackson-Yazoo City Combined Statistical Area. As of the 2010 census, the population of Yazoo City was 11,403.
History
Yazoo City was founded in 1824 and named after the Yazoo River, which forms its western border. The city was incorporated in 1829 and became the county seat of Yazoo County in 1849. During the American Civil War, Yazoo City was the site of a Confederate victory at the Battle of Yazoo City in 1863.
Geography
Yazoo City is located at 32°51'N 90°27'W (32.8500, -90.4500). According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 10.2 square miles (26.4 km2), of which 10.1 square miles (26.2 km2) is land and 0.1 square miles (0.2 km2) is water.
Economy
Yazoo City's economy is largely based on agriculture, with cotton, corn, and soybeans being the primary crops. The city is also home to several manufacturing companies, including a paper mill, a furniture factory, and a chemical plant.
Demographics
As of the 2010 census, there were 11,403 people, 4,072 households, and 2,717 families residing in the city. The population density was 1,125.3 people per square mile (435.2/km2). There were 4,717 housing units at an average density of 464.7 per square mile (179.3/km2). The racial makeup of the city was 57.2% African American, 40.3% White, 0.3% Native American, 0.2% Asian, 0.1% Pacific Islander, 0.7% from other races, and 1.3% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 1.7% of the population.
There were 4,072 households, out of which 33.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 33.2% were married couples living together, 28.2% had a female householder with no husband present, and 32.2% were non-families. 28.2% of all households were made up of individuals, and 11.7% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.63 and the average family size was 3.22.
In the city, the population was spread out, with 28.7% under the age of 18, 10.2% from 18 to 24, 25.2% from 25 to 44, 21.7% from 45 to 64, and 14.2% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 34 years. For every 100 females, there were 86.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 79.7 males.
The median income for a household in the city was $22,917, and the median income for a family was $27,917. Males had a median income of $27,917 versus $20,917 for females. The per capita income for the city was $13,917.
