Wiggins is a city located in Stone County, Mississippi, United States. The population was 5,183 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Stone County. Wiggins is part of the Gulfport–Biloxi Metropolitan Statistical Area.

History

Wiggins was founded in 1883 by the Gulf and Ship Island Railroad. The city was named after Colonel W.W. Wiggins, who was the president of the railroad. The city was incorporated in 1884.

Geography

Wiggins is located at 30°58'25" North, 89°10'25" West (30.973611, -89.173611). According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 5.2 square miles (13.4 km2), all land.

Wiggins is a small town with a diverse economy. The city is home to several small businesses, including a grocery store, a hardware store, a pharmacy, and a variety of restaurants. As of the census of 2000, there were 5,039 people, 1,945 households, and 1,323 families residing in the city. The population density was 972.2 people per square mile (375.3/km2). There were 2,093 housing units at an average density of 400.2 per square mile (154.4/km2). The racial makeup of the city was 68.2% White, 29.7% African American, 0.2% Native American, 0.4% Asian, 0.1% Pacific Islander, 0.7% from other races, and 0.7% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 1.3% of the population.
There were 1,945 households, out of which 32.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 46.2% were married couples living together, 17.2% had a female householder with no husband present, and 32.2% were non-families. 28.2% of all households were made up of individuals, and 13.2% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.50 and the average family size was 3.06.
In the city, the population was spread out, with 26.2% under the age of 18, 8.7% from 18 to 24, 26.2% from 25 to 44, 22.2% from 45 to 64, and 16.7% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 37 years. For every 100 females, there were 87.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 81.2 males.
