Walls Summary

MS History

Mississippi is a state located in the southeastern region of the United States. It is bordered by Tennessee to the north, Alabama to the east, the Gulf of Mexico to the south, and Louisiana and Arkansas to the west. Mississippi was admitted to the Union as the 20th state on December 10, 1817.
The history of Mississippi dates back to the Paleo-Indian period, which began around 12,000 years ago. The first inhabitants of the area were Native American tribes, including the Choctaw, Chickasaw, and Natchez. The first Europeans to explore the area were the Spanish, who arrived in the 16th century. The French also explored the area and established settlements in the late 17th century.
In the early 19th century, Mississippi was part of the Mississippi Territory, which was created in 1798. In 1817, Mississippi became the 20th state to join the Union. During the Civil War, Mississippi seceded from the Union and joined the Confederate States of America. After the war, Mississippi was readmitted to the Union in 1870.
In the late 19th and early 20th centuries, Mississippi was a major center of the cotton industry. The state also experienced a period of racial violence and segregation, which was enforced by Jim Crow laws. In the 1950s and 1960s, the civil rights movement gained momentum in Mississippi, and the state eventually abolished its Jim Crow laws.
