History
Soso was founded in 1883 by the Southern Railroad Company. The town was named after the Choctaw word for “black bear”. The town was originally a stop on the railroad line and was used as a shipping point for cotton and other agricultural products.
In the early 1900s, Soso was a thriving community with a variety of businesses, including a bank, a hotel, a sawmill, a cotton gin, and a grist mill. The town also had a school, a post office, and a newspaper.
In the 1920s, Soso began to decline as the railroad line was rerouted and the town’s businesses began to close. The population of Soso decreased from 1,500 in 1920 to just over 1,000 in 1930.
In the 1940s, Soso began to experience a resurgence as the town’s economy began to diversify. The town’s population increased to 1,500 by 1950.
