Smithville Summary

History

The town of Smithville, Mississippi is located in the northeastern corner of the state, in Monroe County. It is situated on the banks of the Tombigbee River, and is the county seat of Monroe County. The town was founded in 1837, and was named after the Smith family, who were among the first settlers in the area.
The town was originally a small farming community, and the main industry was cotton production. The town was also home to a number of sawmills, which provided lumber for the local economy. In the late 19th century, the town began to grow, and by the early 20th century, it had become a thriving commercial center.
The town was also home to a number of educational institutions, including the Smithville Academy, which was founded in 1845.
