Ridgeland Summary

Ridgeland is a city located in Madison County, Mississippi, United States. It is located just north of the state capital, Jackson, and is part of the Jackson Metropolitan Statistical Area. As of the 2010 census, the city had a population of 24,047.

History

Ridgeland was founded in 1855 by settlers from the nearby town of Madison. The town was originally known as Madison Station, and was a stop on the Illinois Central Railroad. The town was renamed Ridgeland in 1892, after the nearby ridge of land that runs through the area.
Ridgeland was incorporated as a city in 1974, and has since grown to become one of the largest cities in Madison County. The city has experienced rapid growth in recent years, with its population increasing by more than 50% between 2000 and 2010.

Geography

Ridgeland is located at 32°22′45″N 90°9′45″W (32.379167, -90.162500). According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 24.2 square miles (62.7 km2), of which 24.1 square miles (62.4 km2) is land and 0.1 square miles (0.3 km2) (0.41%) is water.

Economy

Ridgeland is home to a variety of businesses, including retail stores, restaurants, and professional services. The city is also home to several large employers, including Nissan North America, St. Dominic Hospital, and the University of Mississippi Medical Center.

Demographics

As of the 2010 census, there were 24,047 people, 9,845 households, and 6,717 families residing in the city. The population density was 998.3 people per square mile (385.7/km2). There were 10,541 housing units at an average density of 436.3 per square mile (168.5/km2). The racial makeup of the city was 68.2% White, 28.2% African American, 0.2% Native American, 1.2% Asian, 0.1% Pacific Islander, 0.7% from other races, and 1.4% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 2.3% of the population.
There were 9,845 households, out of which 33.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 51.2% were married couples living together, 13.7% had a female householder with no husband present, and 30.7% were non-families. 25.2% of all households were made up of individuals, and 6.2% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.45 and the average family size was 2.94.
In the city, the population was spread out, with 25.2% under the age of 18, 8.3% from 18 to 24, 32.2% from 25 to 44, 24.2% from 45 to 64, and 10.1% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 36 years. For every 100 females, there were 92.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 88.7 males.
The median income for a household in the city was $50,945, and the median income for a family was $60,945. Males had a median income of $41,945 versus $30,945 for females. The per capita income for the city was $25,945. About 6.2% of families and 8.3% of the population were below the poverty line, including 10.2% of those under age 18 and 8.2% of those age 65 or over.
