Purvis Summary

Purvis is a small town located in Lamar County, Mississippi. It is situated about 20 miles south of Hattiesburg and is part of the Hattiesburg, Mississippi Metropolitan Statistical Area. The population of Purvis was 2,743 at the 2010 census.

History

Purvis was founded in 1883 by the Purvis family, who had moved to the area from Georgia. The town was named after the Purvis family, who were prominent in the area. The town was incorporated in 1887 and was the first town in Lamar County to be incorporated.
The town was originally a farming community, but in the early 1900s, the lumber industry began to take off in the area. The town was home to several sawmills and lumber companies, and the population of Purvis began to grow.
In the 1950s, Purvis began to experience a decline in the lumber industry, and the population began to decline as well. In the late 1960s, the town began to experience a resurgence in population growth due to the growth of the nearby city of Hattiesburg.

Geography

Purvis is located in Lamar County, Mississippi, about 20 miles south of Hattiesburg. The town is situated on the banks of the Leaf River, which flows through the town. The town is located in the Piney Woods region of Mississippi, and is surrounded by forests and rolling hills.
