Plantersville Summary

Plantersville is a small town located in Lee County, Mississippi. It is situated about 10 miles south of Tupelo, the county seat. The town was founded in 1837 and named after the planters who settled the area. The population of Plantersville was 1,093 at the 2010 census.

History

Plantersville was founded in 1837 by a group of planters who had moved to the area from Virginia. The town was originally known as “Plantersville Station” and was located on the Mobile and Ohio Railroad. The town was officially incorporated in 1845.
During the Civil War, Plantersville was the site of a skirmish between Confederate and Union forces. The Union forces were victorious and the town was occupied by Union troops for the remainder of the war.
In the late 19th century, Plantersville was a thriving agricultural center. Cotton was the main crop grown in the area and the town was home to several cotton gins. The town also had a sawmill, a gristmill, and a brickyard.
In the early 20th century, Plantersville began to decline as the cotton industry moved away from the area. The town’s population decreased and many of the businesses closed.
