Pearlington Summary

Pearlington, Mississippi is a small town located in Hancock County, Mississippi, United States. It is situated on the Pearl River, near the Louisiana border. The town was founded in 1837 and is named after the river. The population was 1,093 at the 2010 census.

History

Pearlington was founded in 1837 by a group of settlers from the nearby town of Pearlington, Louisiana. The settlers were attracted to the area by the abundance of timber and the potential for farming. The town was originally known as "Pearlington Station" and was a stop on the New Orleans, Jackson and Great Northern Railroad. The town was officially incorporated in 1845.
In the late 19th century, Pearlington was a thriving port town, with a population of over 1,000. The town was home to several sawmills, a cotton gin, and a brickyard. The town also had a hotel, a bank, and several stores.
In the early 20th century, Pearlington was a popular tourist destination. The town was home to several resorts, including the Pearlington Hotel, which was built in 1910. The hotel was destroyed by a fire in 1925.
In 2005, Pearlington was devastated by Hurricane Katrina. The town was flooded by the storm surge, and many of the buildings were destroyed. The town has since been rebuilt, and the population has slowly been increasing.

The racial makeup of the town was 97.2% White, 0.9% African American, 0.2% Native American, 0.2% Asian, 0.2% from other races, and 1.3% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 0.7% of the population.
