The area that is now Pearl was first settled in the early 1800s. The town was originally known as Pearl Station, named after the nearby Pearl River. The town was incorporated in 1890 and was named after the river.
In the late 19th century, Pearl was a small farming community. The town was home to a cotton gin, a grist mill, and a sawmill. The town also had a post office, a general store, and a blacksmith shop.
In the early 20th century, Pearl began to grow rapidly. The town was home to several businesses, including a lumber mill, a brickyard, and a canning factory. The town also had a bank, a hotel, and a movie theater.

The racial makeup of the city was 68.2% White, 28.2% African American, 0.3% Native American, 0.7% Asian, 0.1% Pacific Islander, 0.7% from other races, and 1.9% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 2.7% of the population.
There were 9,845 households, out of which 33.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 48.2% were married couples living together, 16.2% had a female householder with no husband present, and 30.7% were non-families. 25.2% of all households were made up of individuals, and 8.2% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.53 and the average family size was 3.03.
In the city, the population was spread out, with 25.9% under the age of 18, 9.2% from 18 to 24, 28.7% from 25 to 44, 24.2% from 45 to 64, and 12.0% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 35 years. For every 100 females, there were 91.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 87.3 males.
