Okolona Summary

Okolona is a city located in Chickasaw County, Mississippi, United States. The population was 3,919 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Chickasaw County.

History

Okolona was founded in 1837 and named after the Choctaw word for "black bear". The city was incorporated in 1845 and was the first county seat of Chickasaw County. The city was a major railroad hub in the late 19th and early 20th centuries, and was home to several cotton mills.

Geography

Okolona is located at 33°45'25" North, 88°37'45" West (33.756944, -88.629167). According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 5.2 square miles (13.4 km2), all land.

Economy

Okolona's economy is largely based on agriculture and manufacturing. The city is home to several poultry processing plants, as well as a number of small businesses. The city is also home to a number of industrial parks, which provide jobs for many of the city's residents.

Demographics

As of the census of 2000, there were 3,919 people, 1,541 households, and 1,039 families residing in the city. The population density was 756.3 people per square mile (291.9/km2). There were 1,717 housing units at an average density of 331.2 per square mile (127.7/km2). The racial makeup of the city was 57.45% White, 41.17% African American, 0.18% Native American, 0.10% Asian, 0.03% Pacific Islander, 0.51% from other races, and 0.56% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 1.08% of the population.
