Augusta, Mississippi is a small town located in Perry County, Mississippi. It is situated on the banks of the Leaf River, approximately 20 miles south of Hattiesburg. The town was founded in 1837 and is named after Augusta, Georgia. It is the county seat of Perry County and has a population of approximately 1,500 people.

History

Augusta was founded in 1837 by a group of settlers from Georgia. The town was named after Augusta, Georgia, and was originally known as “New Augusta”. The town was incorporated in 1839 and was the first town in Perry County.
In the early years, Augusta was a small farming community. The town was home to a number of small businesses, including a general store, a blacksmith shop, and a cotton gin. The town also had a post office, a school, and a church.
In the late 1800s, Augusta began to grow and develop. The town was connected to the railroad in 1887, which allowed for the transportation of goods and people. This helped to spur economic growth in the area.
