Monticello Summary

Monticello, Mississippi is a small town located in Lawrence County, Mississippi. It is situated in the northeast corner of the state, approximately 60 miles south of Memphis, Tennessee. The town has a population of approximately 2,000 people and is the county seat of Lawrence County.

History

Monticello was founded in 1837 and named after Thomas Jefferson’s home in Virginia. The town was originally a trading post and was the first county seat of Lawrence County. The town was incorporated in 1845 and was the site of the first courthouse in the county.
