Macon Summary

Macon, Mississippi is a small town located in Noxubee County, Mississippi. It is situated in the east-central part of the state, approximately 80 miles east of Jackson, the state capital. The town has a population of approximately 1,500 people and is the county seat of Noxubee County.

History

Macon was founded in 1837 and named after Nathaniel Macon, a prominent politician from North Carolina. The town was originally a trading post and was the site of a major battle during the Civil War. After the war, Macon became a center for cotton production and was home to several cotton mills. The town was also home to a number of prominent African-American businesses, including a bank, a newspaper, and a hotel.
