Coahoma Summary

Coahoma is a city located in the northwestern corner of Mississippi, in the United States. It is the county seat of Coahoma County, and is part of the Clarksdale, Mississippi Micropolitan Statistical Area. The population of Coahoma was 2,922 at the 2010 census.

History

Coahoma was founded in 1836 by the Chickasaw Indians, who named it after the Choctaw word for “red panther.” The city was incorporated in 1848, and was the first county seat of Coahoma County. The city was a major trading center for cotton and other agricultural products, and was a major stop on the Mississippi River.
During the Civil War, Coahoma was the site of a major battle between Union and Confederate forces. The Battle of Coahoma was fought on April 17, 1863, and resulted in a Confederate victory.
In the late 19th century, Coahoma became a major center for the cotton industry. The city was home to several cotton mills, and was the site of the first cotton gin in the state of Mississippi.

Coahoma is located at 34°17'25" North, 90°37'17" West (34.290278, -90.621389). The city is situated on the banks of the Mississippi River, and is located about 25 miles south of Memphis, Tennessee.

Coahoma’s economy is largely based on agriculture and manufacturing. The city is home to several cotton mills, and is a major center for the production of cotton and other agricultural products.
The city is also home to several manufacturing companies, including a furniture factory, a paper mill, and a plastics plant.

Demographics

As of the 2010 census, there were 2,922 people, 1,093 households, and 717 families residing in the city. The population density was 694.3 people per square mile. There were 1,223 housing units at an average density of 291.7 per square mile.
The racial makeup of the city was 57.2% African American, 40.2% White, 0.3% Native American, 0.3% Asian, 0.1% Pacific Islander, 0.7% from other races, and 1.3% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 1.7% of the population.
There were 1,093 households, out of which 33.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 33.2% were married couples living together, 28.2% had a female householder with no husband present, and 32.2% were non-families. 28.2% of all households were made up of individuals, and 11.7% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.63 and the average family size was 3.20.
In the city, the population was spread out, with 30.2% under the age of 18, 10.2% from 18 to 24, 24.2% from 25 to 44, 21.2% from 45 to 64, and 14.2% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 33 years. For every 100 females, there were 83.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 77.2 males.
The median income for a household in the city was $20,972, and the median income for a family was $25,000. Males had a median income of $27,500 versus $17,500 for females. The per capita income for the city was $11,845. About 28.2% of families and 32.2% of the population were below the poverty line, including 45.2% of those under age 18 and 24.2% of those age 65 or over.
