History

Monroe County was established in 1821 and named after James Monroe, the fifth President of the United States. The county was originally part of the Chickasaw Cession of 1832, which ceded the land to the United States. The county was then divided into two parts, with the western portion becoming Itawamba County and the eastern portion becoming Monroe County.
