History
Adams County was established in 1809, and was named after President John Adams. The county was originally part of the Natchez District, which was established in 1798. The county was divided into two parts in 1811, with the western part becoming Jefferson County. The county seat of Adams County is Natchez, which was founded in 1716 by French colonists.
The county was a major center of cotton production during the antebellum period, and was home to many large plantations. During the Civil War, the county was the site of several battles, including the Battle of Port Gibson in 1863. After the war, the county was the site of the Natchez Race Riot of 1868, which was one of the first race riots in the United States.
