Big Creek is a small unincorporated community located in the northern part of Tishomingo County, Mississippi. It is situated along the banks of Big Creek, a tributary of the Tennessee River. The community is located approximately 10 miles south of Iuka, the county seat, and about 25 miles north of Tupelo, the state’s third-largest city.

History

Big Creek was first settled in the early 1800s by settlers from the Carolinas and Virginia. The community was originally known as “Big Creek Settlement” and was located along the banks of Big Creek. The settlement was established as a trading post and was used as a stopover for travelers heading west.
In 1836, the settlement was officially incorporated as the town of Big Creek. The town was named after the creek that ran through it and was the first town in Tishomingo County.
In the late 1800s, Big Creek was a thriving community with a population of over 500 people. The town had several stores, a post office, a school, a church, and a cotton gin. The town was also home to a number of businesses, including a blacksmith shop, a sawmill, and a gristmill.
In the early 1900s, the population of Big Creek began to decline as many of the town’s residents moved away in search of better economic opportunities. By the mid-1900s, the population had dropped to less than 200 people.
