History
Baldwyn was founded in 1854 by William B. Baldwyn, a planter from Virginia. The town was incorporated in 1858 and was named after him. The town was a major railroad hub in the late 19th century, and the railroad industry was the main source of employment for the town's residents.
Geography
Baldwyn is located at 34°25'25" North, 88°48'17" West (34.423750, -88.804722). According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 4.2 square miles (10.8 km2), all land.
Economy
The economy of Baldwyn is largely based on agriculture and manufacturing. The city is home to several manufacturing plants, including a furniture plant, a plastics plant, and a paper mill. The city also has a number of retail stores and restaurants.

As of the census of 2000, there were 3,093 people, 1,214 households, and 817 families residing in the city. The population density was 735.2 people per square mile (284.2/km2). There were 1,323 housing units at an average density of 315.7 per square mile (121.7/km2). The racial makeup of the city was 68.90% White, 29.90% African American, 0.13% Native American, 0.26% Asian, 0.03% Pacific Islander, 0.39% from other races, and 0.39% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 0.90% of the population.
There were 1,214 households, out of which 32.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 44.2% were married couples living together, 19.2% had a female householder with no husband present, and 32.2% were non-families. 28.7% of all households were made up of individuals, and 14.2% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.50 and the average family size was 3.06.
In the city, the population was spread out, with 27.2% under the age of 18, 8.7% from 18 to 24, 27.2% from 25 to 44, 21.2% from 45 to 64, and 15.7% who were 65 years of age or older.
