Amory Summary
Amory is a city located in Monroe County, Mississippi. It is the county seat of Monroe County and is located in the northeastern part of the state. The city is situated along the Tombigbee River and is part of the Tupelo Micropolitan Statistical Area. As of the 2010 census, the city had a population of 7,316.
History
The area that is now Amory was first settled in the early 1800s by settlers from the Carolinas and Virginia. The town was originally known as “Crossroads” due to its location at the intersection of two major roads. In 1854, the town was renamed Amory in honor of General William Amory, a prominent local landowner.
In the late 19th century, Amory became an important railroad hub. The Mobile and Ohio Railroad was built through the town in 1858, and the town was incorporated in 1883. The railroad brought economic growth to the area, and Amory soon became a center for the lumber industry.
Geography
Amory is located at 33°48'N 88°27'W (33.8, -88.45). According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 8.3 square miles (21.5 km2), of which 8.2 square miles (21.3 km2) is land and 0.1 square miles (0.2 km2) is water.
Economy
Amory’s economy is largely based on manufacturing and agriculture. The city is home to several manufacturing plants, including a plant owned by the Georgia-Pacific Corporation that produces wood products. The city is also home to several agricultural businesses, including a large poultry processing plant.
Demographics
As of the 2010 census, there were 7,316 people, 2,845 households, and 1,845 families residing in the city. The population density was 890.2 people per square mile (344.3/km2). There were 3,093 housing units at an average density of 376.3 per square mile (145.2/km2). The racial makeup of the city was 68.2% White, 29.3% African American, 0.3% Native American, 0.4% Asian, 0.1% Pacific Islander, 0.7% from other races, and 1.1% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 1.7% of the population.
There were 2,845 households, out of which 30.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 41.2% were married couples living together, 19.2% had a female householder with no husband present, and 35.2% were non-families. 30.7% of all households were made up of individuals, and 14.2% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.45 and the average family size was 3.04.
In the city, the population was spread out, with 25.7% under the age of 18, 8.7% from 18 to 24, 25.3% from 25 to 44, 22.3% from 45 to 64, and 18.0% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 38 years. For every 100 females, there were 86.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 81.2 males.
The median income for a household in the city was $27,813, and the median income for a family was $35,938. Males had a median income of $30,917 versus $20,972 for females. The per capita income for the city was $15,845. About 17.2% of families and 20.3% of the population were below the poverty line, including 28.2% of those under age 18 and 17.2% of those age 65 or over.
