Honomu Summary

Honomu is a small unincorporated community located in the Hamakua District of Hawaii County, Hawaii. It is situated on the northeast coast of the Big Island, approximately 20 miles northeast of Hilo. The population of Honomu was estimated to be around 500 in 2020.

History

Honomu was founded in the late 1800s by Japanese immigrants who were looking for a place to settle and farm. The town was originally called “Honomu-mura”, which means “village of the valley” in Japanese. The town was a thriving agricultural community, with sugarcane, coffee, and macadamia nut plantations. In the early 1900s, the town was home to a large Japanese population, and many of the original buildings still stand today.
In the 1920s, the town was home to a large number of Japanese immigrants who were looking for work in the sugarcane and pineapple plantations. The town was also home to a large number of Chinese immigrants who were looking for work in the local stores and restaurants.
In the 1940s, the town was home to a large number of Japanese-Americans who were interned during World War II. After the war, many of the Japanese-Americans returned to Honomu and the town continued to thrive.

Geography

Honomu is located on the northeast coast of the Big Island, approximately 20 miles northeast of Hilo. The town is situated in a valley surrounded by lush tropical rainforest and is bordered by the Wailuku River to the north and the Hamakua Coast to the south. The town is located at an elevation of approximately 1,000 feet and has a tropical climate with temperatures ranging from the mid-70s to the mid-80s.
