Vamo Summary
Vamo is a census-designated place (CDP) located in Sarasota County, Florida, United States. The population was 2,845 at the 2010 census. It is part of the North Port–Sarasota–Bradenton Metropolitan Statistical Area.

History
Vamo was originally a small fishing village located on the banks of the Myakka River. The name Vamo is derived from the Spanish word for “go” or “come”. The village was established in the late 1800s and was home to a small population of fishermen and farmers.
In the early 1900s, the village began to grow as more people moved to the area. The village was incorporated in 1925 and was officially named Vamo.
In the 1950s, the village began to experience rapid growth as more people moved to the area. The population of Vamo increased from 1,000 in 1950 to over 5,000 in 1960.
Economy
Vamo’s economy is largely based on tourism and agriculture. The area is home to several tourist attractions, including the Myakka River State Park, the Myakka River State Forest, and the Myakka River Wildlife Management Area.
Agriculture is also an important part of the local economy. The area is home to several farms, including citrus, vegetable, and dairy farms.
Demographics
As of the census of 2000, there were 2,845 people, 1,093 households, and 790 families residing in the CDP. The population density was 2,093.3 people per square mile (807.2/km2). There were 1,183 housing units at an average density of 863.2/sq mi (333.2/km2). The racial makeup of the CDP was 97.45% White, 0.53% African American, 0.14% Native American, 0.53% Asian, 0.14% Pacific Islander, 0.53% from other races, and 0.71% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 2.45% of the population.
There were 1,093 households, out of which 28.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 57.2% were married couples living together, 9.2% had a female householder with no husband present, and 29.3% were non-families. 24.2% of all households were made up of individuals, and 11.2% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.60 and the average family size was 3.09.
In the CDP, the population was spread out, with 22.7% under the age of 18, 6.2% from 18 to 24, 25.2% from 25 to 44, 25.2% from 45 to 64, and 20.7% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 42 years. For every 100 females, there were 97.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 94.2 males.
The median income for a household in the CDP was $41,964, and the median income for a family was $48,929. Males had a median income of $35,000 versus $25,000 for females. The per capita income for the CDP was $20,945. About 6.2% of families and 8.2% of the population were below the poverty line, including 10.2% of those under age 18 and 6.2% of those age 65 or over.
