Upper Grand Lagoon Summary
Upper Grand Lagoon is a census-designated place (CDP) located in Bay County, Florida, United States. It is part of the Panama City–Lynn Haven–Panama City Beach Metropolitan Statistical Area. The population was 8,845 at the 2010 census.
History
Upper Grand Lagoon was first settled in the late 19th century by fishermen and farmers. The area was originally known as "Lagoon Point" and was part of the larger Grand Lagoon area. In the early 20th century, the area was developed as a resort community, with the construction of a number of hotels and other tourist attractions. The area was incorporated as a town in 1953, and the name was changed to Upper Grand Lagoon.
Geography
Upper Grand Lagoon is located at 30°10'25" North, 85°45'17" West (30.173611, -85.754722). According to the United States Census Bureau, the CDP has a total area of 4.2 square miles (10.8 km2), of which 4.1 square miles (10.6 km2) is land and 0.1 square miles (0.2 km2) (2.17%) is water.
Economy
Upper Grand Lagoon is a popular tourist destination, with a number of hotels, restaurants, and other attractions. The area is also home to a number of marinas, boat ramps, and other recreational facilities. The economy of Upper Grand Lagoon is largely based on tourism and related services.
Demographics
As of the census of 2000, there were 8,845 people, 3,845 households, and 2,541 families residing in the CDP. The population density was 2,150.3 people per square mile (830.2/km2). There were 4,541 housing units at an average density of 1,097.2/sq mi (424.7/km2). The racial makeup of the CDP was 97.17% White, 0.90% African American, 0.45% Native American, 0.45% Asian, 0.02% Pacific Islander, 0.25% from other races, and 0.76% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 1.17% of the population.
There were 3,845 households, out of which 24.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 53.2% were married couples living together, 9.7% had a female householder with no husband present, and 33.2% were non-families. 28.2% of all households were made up of individuals, and 11.2% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.30 and the average family size was 2.79.
In the CDP, the population was spread out, with 20.7% under the age of 18, 6.2% from 18 to 24, 25.2% from 25 to 44, 28.2% from 45 to 64, and 19.7% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 43 years. For every 100 females, there were 94.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 91.2 males.
The median income for a household in the CDP was $37,917, and the median income for a family was $45,938. Males had a median income of $31,912 versus $22,917 for females. The per capita income for the CDP was $20,945. About 6.2% of families and 8.7% of the population were below the poverty line, including 11.2% of those under age 18 and 6.2% of those age 65 or over.
