South Sarasota is a census-designated place (CDP) located in Sarasota County, Florida, United States. The population was 8,845 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Bradenton–Sarasota–Venice Metropolitan Statistical Area.

According to the United States Census Bureau, the CDP has a total area of 4.2 square miles (10.8 km2), of which 4.1 square miles (10.6 km2) is land and 0.1 square miles (0.2 km2) (2.45%) is water.

History

South Sarasota was originally part of the town of Sarasota, which was founded in 1885. In the early 1900s, the area was known as "Sarasota Heights" and was a popular vacation spot for wealthy northerners. In the 1950s, the area began to be developed as a residential community.
In the 1970s, South Sarasota was annexed by the City of Sarasota. In the 1980s, the area was rezoned for commercial and industrial development.

Economy

South Sarasota is home to a variety of businesses, including retail stores, restaurants, and professional services. The area is also home to several industrial parks, which provide employment opportunities for local residents.

Demographics

As of the census of 2000, there were 8,845 people, 3,845 households, and 2,521 families residing in the CDP. The population density was 2,150.3 people per square mile (830.2/km2). There were 4,093 housing units at an average density of 990.2/sq mi (382.2/km2). The racial makeup of the CDP was 87.45% White, 5.90% African American, 0.37% Native American, 1.45% Asian, 0.02% Pacific Islander, 3.17% from other races, and 1.64% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 8.90% of the population.
There were 3,845 households, out of which 24.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 48.2% were married couples living together, 11.7% had a female householder with no husband present, and 36.2% were non-families. 29.2% of all households were made up of individuals, and 11.7% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.30 and the average family size was 2.83.
In the CDP, the population was spread out, with 20.2% under the age of 18, 6.7% from 18 to 24, 27.2% from 25 to 44, 25.2% from 45 to 64, and 20.7% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 42 years. For every 100 females, there were 92.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 88.7 males.
The median income for a household in the CDP was $37,945, and the median income for a family was $45,945. Males had a median income of $31,945 versus $25,945 for females. The per capita income for the CDP was $20,945. About 6.7% of families and 9.2% of the population were below the poverty line, including 11.7% of those under age 18 and 6.7% of those age 65 or over.
