Rockledge Summary
Rockledge, Florida is a city located in Brevard County, Florida, United States. It is part of the Palm Bay–Melbourne–Titusville Metropolitan Statistical Area. The population was 24,926 at the 2010 United States Census, and had grown to an estimated 28,845 as of 2019.
History
Rockledge was founded in 1887 by settlers from Georgia and named after the rocky outcroppings along the Indian River. The town was incorporated in 1925. The first mayor was J.A. Henderson.
The city was home to the first public library in Brevard County, which opened in 1925. The library was housed in the old Rockledge School building until it was moved to its current location in the 1950s.
Geography
Rockledge is located at 28°19′N 80°45′W (28.3167, -80.7500). According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 11.2 square miles (29.0 km2), of which 10.9 square miles (28.2 km2) is land and 0.3 square miles (0.8 km2) (2.68%) is water.
Economy
Rockledge is home to a variety of businesses, including retail stores, restaurants, and professional services. The city is also home to several large employers, including the Kennedy Space Center, the Brevard Zoo, and the Brevard County Government.
Demographics
As of the 2010 United States Census, there were 24,926 people, 9,945 households, and 6,845 families residing in the city. The population density was 2,279.3 people per square mile (882.2/km2). There were 10,845 housing units at an average density of 993.2 per square mile (383.7/km2). The racial makeup of the city was 79.2% White, 11.3% African American, 0.4% Native American, 2.2% Asian, 0.1% Pacific Islander, 4.2% from other races, and 2.7% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 11.7% of the population.
There were 9,945 households, out of which 28.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 51.2% were married couples living together, 12.2% had a female householder with no husband present, and 32.2% were non-families. 26.2% of all households were made up of individuals, and 11.2% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.50 and the average family size was 3.02.
In the city, the population was spread out, with 23.2% under the age of 18, 7.2% from 18 to 24, 26.2% from 25 to 44, 25.2% from 45 to 64, and 18.2% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 40 years. For every 100 females, there were 93.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 89.7 males.
The median income for a household in the city was $45,845, and the median income for a family was $54,845. Males had a median income of $41,845 versus $30,845 for females. The per capita income for the city was $23,845. About 6.2% of families and 8.2% of the population were below the poverty line, including 11.2% of those under age 18 and 6.2% of those age 65 or over.
