Mulberry Summary

Mulberry is a city located in Polk County, Florida, United States. The population was 2,819 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Lakeland–Winter Haven Metropolitan Statistical Area.

History

Mulberry was founded in 1883 by Captain J.T. Wells, a Confederate veteran. The city was named after the mulberry trees that grew in the area. The first post office was established in 1884.

Geography

Mulberry is located at 28°00′N 81°59′W (28.00, -81.99). According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 4.2 square miles (10.8 km2), of which 4.1 square miles (10.6 km2) is land and 0.1 square miles (0.2 km2) (2.17%) is water.

Economy

Mulberry is home to several businesses, including a Walmart Supercenter, a Publix Super Market, and a variety of restaurants. The city is also home to the Mulberry Phosphate Museum, which is dedicated to the history of phosphate mining in the area.

Demographics

As of the census of 2000, there were 2,819 people, 1,093 households, and 790 families residing in the city. The population density was 690.2 people per square mile (266.7/km2). There were 1,179 housing units at an average density of 287.2 per square mile (110.8/km2). The racial makeup of the city was 79.17% White, 15.90% African American, 0.39% Native American, 0.53% Asian, 0.04% Pacific Islander, 2.45% from other races, and 1.52% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 5.90% of the population.
There were 1,093 households, out of which 33.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 51.2% were married couples living together, 15.7% had a female householder with no husband present, and 28.2% were non-families. 22.7% of all households were made up of individuals, and 9.7% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.58 and the average family size was 3.02.
In the city, the population was spread out, with 26.2% under the age of 18, 8.7% from 18 to 24, 28.2% from 25 to 44, 22.7% from 45 to 64, and 14.2% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 36 years. For every 100 females, there were 93.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 88.7 males.
