History

Milton was founded in 1844 by John Milton, a former Confederate general and the first governor of Florida. The city was named after him and was incorporated in 1844. The city was originally a trading post and was known as Scratch Ankle due to the briars and brambles that grew in the area.
In the late 19th century, Milton was a major center for the lumber industry. The city was home to several sawmills and was the site of the first paper mill in the state of Florida. The city was also home to a number of other industries, including a cotton gin, a grist mill, and a brickyard.
In the early 20th century, Milton was a major center for the turpentine industry. The city was home to several turpentine stills and was the site of the first turpentine distillery in the state of Florida.

Geography

Milton is located in the Florida Panhandle at 30°37′N 87°02′W (30.619, -87.033). It is situated on the Blackwater River, which flows south to Pensacola Bay. The city is located approximately 25 miles northeast of Pensacola and is part of the Pensacola–Ferry Pass–Brent Metropolitan Statistical Area.
The city has a total area of 8.2 square miles, of which 8.1 square miles is land and 0.1 square miles is water.

Milton’s economy is largely based on the service industry. The city is home to a number of retail stores, restaurants, and other businesses. The city is also home to a number of manufacturing and industrial businesses, including a paper mill, a lumber mill, and a brickyard.

Demographics

As of the 2010 census, there were 7,045 people, 2,845 households, and 1,845 families residing in the city. The population density was 867.2 people per square mile. There were 3,093 housing units at an average density of 382.3 per square mile. The racial makeup of the city was 79.2% White, 15.3% African American, 0.7% Native American, 0.7% Asian, 0.1% Pacific Islander, 2.2% from other races, and 2.0% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 5.3% of the population.
There were 2,845 households, out of which 28.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 43.2% were married couples living together, 16.2% had a female householder with no husband present, and 35.7% were non-families. 29.7% of all households were made up of individuals, and 11.7% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.41 and the average family size was 2.97.
In the city, the population was spread out, with 24.2% under the age of 18, 8.7% from 18 to 24, 25.7% from 25 to 44, 24.3% from 45 to 64, and 17.1% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 38 years. For every 100 females, there were 91.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 87.3 males.
The median income for a household in the city was $32,813, and the median income for a family was $41,919. Males had a median income of $31,919 versus $22,917 for females. The per capita income for the city was $17,845. About 13.2% of families and 17.2% of the population were below the poverty line, including 24.2% of those under age 18 and 11.2% of those age 65 or over.
