Malabar Summary
Malabar is a small town located in Brevard County, Florida, United States. It is situated on the Indian River Lagoon, just south of Melbourne. The population was 1,814 at the 2010 census.
History
Malabar was first settled in the late 1800s by a group of settlers from the Malabar region of India. The town was originally called Malabar Station, and was a stop on the Florida East Coast Railway. The town was officially incorporated in 1925.
Geography
Malabar is located at 28°1′25″N 80°37′17″W (28.023607, -80.621390). According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 1.2 square miles (3.1 km2), all land.
Economy
Malabar is a small town with a limited economy. The town is home to a few small businesses, including a grocery store, a hardware store, and a few restaurants. The town also has a few small manufacturing companies.
Demographics
As of the census of 2000, there were 1,814 people, 690 households, and 517 families residing in the town. The population density was 1,521.2 people per square mile (586.3/km2). There were 745 housing units at an average density of 619.2 per square mile (239.2/km2). The racial makeup of the town was 97.2% White, 0.7% African American, 0.3% Native American, 0.3% Asian, 0.3% from other races, and 1.2% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 2.2% of the population.
There were 690 households, out of which 33.3% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 58.3% were married couples living together, 10.1% had a female householder with no husband present, and 27.2% were non-families. 22.2% of all households were made up of individuals, and 9.4% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.63 and the average family size was 3.06.
In the town, the population was spread out, with 25.7% under the age of 18, 6.7% from 18 to 24, 28.2% from 25 to 44, 25.2% from 45 to 64, and 14.2% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 39 years. For every 100 females, there were 97.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 94.2 males.
