Madison Summary

Madison is a city located in the state of Florida, United States. It is the county seat of Madison County and is located in the north-central part of the state. The city is situated on the banks of the Withlacoochee River and is part of the Suwannee River Valley. As of the 2010 census, the population of Madison was 2,967.

History

The area that is now Madison was first settled in 1827 by a group of settlers from Georgia. The settlement was originally known as "Lanier's Old Field" and was named after the Lanier family who had settled in the area. The settlement was later renamed Madison in honor of James Madison, the fourth President of the United States.
