Longwood Summary

Longwood, Florida is a city located in Seminole County, Florida, United States. The city is part of the Orlando–Kissimmee–Sanford Metropolitan Statistical Area. As of the 2010 census, the city had a population of 13,657.

History

Longwood was founded in 1882 by a group of settlers from Longwood, Massachusetts. The settlers named the town after their hometown in Massachusetts. The town was incorporated in 1925.

Geography

Longwood is located at 28°41'17" North, 81°20'45" West (28.688056, -81.345833). According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 8.2 square miles (21.2 km2), of which 8.1 square miles (21.0 km2) is land and 0.1 square miles (0.2 km2) is water.

Economy

Longwood is home to a variety of businesses, including retail stores, restaurants, and professional services. The city is also home to several large employers, including the Florida Hospital, the Seminole County Public Schools, and the City of Longwood.

Demographics

As of the 2010 census, there were 13,657 people, 5,717 households, and 3,541 families residing in the city. The population density was 1,683.3 people per square mile (650.2/km2). There were 6,093 housing units at an average density of 751.3 per square mile (290.2/km2). The racial makeup of the city was 79.2% White, 11.2% African American, 0.4% Native American, 2.2% Asian, 0.1% Pacific Islander, 4.7% from other races, and 2.2% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 13.3% of the population.
There were 5,717 households, out of which 28.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 46.2% were married couples living together, 12.7% had a female householder with no husband present, and 36.2% were non-families. 28.7% of all households were made up of individuals, and 8.3% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.37 and the average family size was 2.93.
In the city, the population was spread out, with 22.7% under the age of 18, 8.2% from 18 to 24, 30.2% from 25 to 44, 25.2% from 45 to 64, and 13.7% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 38 years. For every 100 females, there were 94.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 91.2 males.
The median income for a household in the city was $45,837, and the median income for a family was $54,837. Males had a median income of $37,857 versus $27,837 for females.
