Havana Summary

Havana, Florida is a small town located in Gadsden County, in the panhandle of Florida. It is situated on the banks of the Ochlockonee River, and is approximately 20 miles northwest of Tallahassee. The town was founded in 1827 and was named after the Cuban capital of Havana. It is a rural community with a population of 2,569 as of the 2010 census.

Geography

Havana is located at 30°41'N 84°17'W (30.6833, -84.2833). It is situated on the banks of the Ochlockonee River, and is approximately 20 miles northwest of Tallahassee. The town is located in the Red Hills region of Florida, and is surrounded by rolling hills and pine forests. The terrain is mostly flat, with some areas of higher elevation. The climate is humid subtropical, with hot summers and mild winters.

Economy

Havana’s economy is largely based on agriculture and timber production. The town is home to several farms, including tobacco, cotton, and peanuts. The timber industry is also a major employer in the area, with several sawmills and wood-processing plants located in the town. Other industries in the area include manufacturing, retail, and tourism.

Demographics

As of the 2010 census, Havana had a population of 2,569. The racial makeup of the town was 65.2% White, 28.2% African American, 0.3% Native American, 0.3% Asian, 0.1% Pacific Islander, 4.2% from other races, and 1.7% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 8.2% of the population.
