Gretna is located at 30°37'25" North, 84°37'25" West (30.623607, -84.623607). According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 1.2 square miles (3.1 km2), all land.
History
Gretna was founded in 1825 by settlers from Georgia. The town was named after Gretna Green, Scotland, where runaway couples traditionally eloped. The town was incorporated in 1887.

Hispanic or Latino of any race were 1.2% of the population.
There were 690 households, out of which 33.3% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 44.3% were married couples living together, 20.3% had a female householder with no husband present, and 30.3% were non-families. 25.2% of all households were made up of individuals, and 11.3% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.67 and the average family size was 3.20.
In the town, the population was spread out, with 28.2% under the age of 18, 8.7% from 18 to 24, 27.2% from 25 to 44, 22.2% from 45 to 64, and 13.7% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 36 years. For every 100 females, there were 87.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 81.2 males.
