Edgewood is a city located in Orange County, Florida, United States. It is part of the Orlando–Kissimmee–Sanford Metropolitan Statistical Area. The population was 2,503 at the 2010 census.

History

Edgewood was founded in the late 19th century by settlers from the North. The city was originally known as "Lake Conway Woods" and was later renamed "Edgewood" after the nearby lake. The city was incorporated in 1925.

Geography

Edgewood is located at 28°30′N 81°25′W (28.50, -81.41). According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 1.3 square miles (3.4 km2), all land.

Edgewood is home to a variety of businesses, including retail stores, restaurants, and professional services. The city is also home to several industrial parks, which provide employment opportunities for local residents.

Demographics

As of the census of 2000, there were 2,503 people, 1,039 households, and 690 families residing in the city. The population density was 1,919.2 people per square mile (739.7/km2). There were 1,093 housing units at an average density of 837.2 per square mile (323.7/km2). The racial makeup of the city was 79.2% White, 11.2% African American, 0.4% Native American, 1.2% Asian, 0.1% Pacific Islander, 5.2% from other races, and 3.0% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 11.2% of the population.
There were 1,039 households, out of which 28.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 48.2% were married couples living together, 13.2% had a female householder with no husband present, and 33.7% were non-families. 27.2% of all households were made up of individuals, and 8.2% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.42 and the average family size was 2.94.
In the city, the population was spread out, with 23.7% under the age of 18, 8.2% from 18 to 24, 30.3% from 25 to 44, 24.2% from 45 to 64, and 13.6% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 37 years. For every 100 females, there were 95.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 92.2 males.
