Dover Summary
Dover is a census-designated place (CDP) located in Hillsborough County, Florida, United States. The population was 2,845 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Tampa–St. Petersburg–Clearwater Metropolitan Statistical Area.
History
Dover was first settled in the late 19th century by settlers from the North. The area was originally known as "Dover Station" and was a stop on the Plant System of Railroads. The town was officially incorporated in 1925 and was named after Dover, England.
Geography
Dover is located at 28°10'25" North, 82°20'45" West (28.173611, -82.345833). According to the United States Census Bureau, the CDP has a total area of 4.2 square miles (10.8 km2), of which 4.1 square miles (10.6 km2) is land and 0.1 square miles (0.2 km2) (2.44%) is water.
Economy
Dover is home to several businesses, including a Walmart Supercenter, a Publix Super Market, and a variety of restaurants and other retail stores. The town is also home to several industrial and manufacturing companies, including a Coca-Cola bottling plant and a Tyson Foods processing plant.
Demographics
As of the census of 2000, there were 2,845 people, 1,039 households, and 790 families residing in the CDP. The population density was 690.3 people per square mile (266.7/km2). There were 1,093 housing units at an average density of 263.7/sq mi (101.7/km2). The racial makeup of the CDP was 79.90% White, 14.45% African American, 0.21% Native American, 0.53% Asian, 0.04% Pacific Islander, 3.45% from other races, and 1.42% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 8.45% of the population.
There were 1,039 households, out of which 33.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 57.2% were married couples living together, 13.2% had a female householder with no husband present, and 24.2% were non-families. 19.2% of all households were made up of individuals, and 8.2% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.75 and the average family size was 3.14.
In the CDP, the population was spread out, with 25.7% under the age of 18, 8.2% from 18 to 24, 28.2% from 25 to 44, 24.2% from 45 to 64, and 13.7% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 37 years. For every 100 females, there were 97.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 94.2 males.
The median income for a household in the CDP was $41,944, and the median income for a family was $45,938. Males had a median income of $31,912 versus $25,000 for females. The per capita income for the CDP was $17,845. About 8.2% of families and 10.2% of the population were below the poverty line, including 14.2% of those under age 18 and 8.2% of those age 65 or over.
