Crestview Summary

Crestview is a city located in Okaloosa County, Florida, United States. It is the county seat of Okaloosa County and is located in the Florida Panhandle. The population of Crestview was 20,978 at the 2010 census, up from 12,795 at the 2000 census.

Geography

Crestview is located in the Florida Panhandle at 30°42'N 86°30'W (30.7, -86.5). It is located in the northern part of Okaloosa County, approximately 40 miles east of Pensacola and 40 miles west of Panama City. According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 16.2 square miles (41.8 km2), of which 16.1 square miles (41.6 km2) is land and 0.1 square miles (0.2 km2) (0.62%) is water.

History

Crestview was founded in 1885 by a group of settlers from Georgia and Alabama. The city was named for its location at the highest point of the Yellow River. The city was incorporated in 1916 and has grown steadily since then.

Economy

Crestview is home to a variety of businesses, including manufacturing, retail, and service industries. The city is also home to Eglin Air Force Base, which is the largest employer in the area. Other major employers include the Okaloosa County School District, the Okaloosa County Sheriff's Office, and the Okaloosa County Health Department.

Demographics

As of the 2010 census, there were 20,978 people, 8,093 households, and 5,541 families residing in the city. The population density was 1,297.3 people per square mile (500.2/km2). There were 8,890 housing units at an average density of 553.2 per square mile (213.3/km2). The racial makeup of the city was 73.2% White, 17.3% African American, 0.7% Native American, 1.7% Asian, 0.1% Pacific Islander, 4.3% from other races, and 2.7% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 8.7% of the population.
There were 8,093 households, out of which 32.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 47.2% were married couples living together, 15.3% had a female householder with no husband present, and 32.7% were non-families. 26.2% of all households were made up of individuals, and 9.2% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.54 and the average family size was 3.05.
In the city, the population was spread out, with 25.7% under the age of 18, 9.2% from 18 to 24, 28.3% from 25 to 44, 23.2% from 45 to 64, and 13.6% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 36 years. For every 100 females, there were 94.3 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 90.7 males.
The median income for a household in the city was $37,845, and the median income for a family was $45,876. Males had a median income of $31,845 versus $22,813 for females. The per capita income for the city was $19,845. About 11.2% of families and 14.2% of the population were below the poverty line, including 19.2% of those under age 18 and 10.2% of those age 65 or over.
