Cocoa Summary
Cocoa is a city located in Brevard County, Florida, United States. It is part of the Palm Bay–Melbourne–Titusville Metropolitan Statistical Area. The population was 17,140 at the 2010 United States Census. It is the principal city of the Cocoa, Florida Metropolitan Statistical Area, which had a population of 60,945 at the 2010 census.
Geography
Cocoa is located at 28°19′45″N 80°45′58″W (28.329092, -80.766118). According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 15.3 square miles (39.6 km2), of which 14.7 square miles (38.1 km2) is land and 0.6 square miles (1.5 km2) (3.90%) is water.
Economy
Cocoa is home to a variety of businesses, including manufacturing, retail, and service industries. The city is also home to the Kennedy Space Center, which is a major employer in the area. The city is also home to a number of tourist attractions, including the Brevard Zoo, the Cocoa Beach Pier, and the Historic Cocoa Village.
Demographics
As of the census of 2000, there were 16,412 people, 6,844 households, and 4,072 families residing in the city. The population density was 1,117.2 people per square mile (431.2/km2). There were 7,837 housing units at an average density of 535.2 per square mile (206.9/km2). The racial makeup of the city was 68.45% White, 25.90% African American, 0.37% Native American, 0.90% Asian, 0.06% Pacific Islander, 2.90% from other races, and 1.42% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 8.45% of the population.
There were 6,844 households, out of which 25.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 38.2% were married couples living together, 17.2% had a female householder with no husband present, and 39.2% were non-families. 32.2% of all households were made up of individuals, and 13.2% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.37 and the average family size was 2.99.
In the city, the population was spread out, with 23.2% under the age of 18, 8.2% from 18 to 24, 27.2% from 25 to 44, 22.7% from 45 to 64, and 18.7% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 39 years. For every 100 females, there were 91.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 87.3 males.
The median income for a household in the city was $30,890, and the median income for a family was $37,869. Males had a median income of $30,890 versus $22,857 for females. The per capita income for the city was $17,890. About 14.2% of families and 17.7% of the population were below the poverty line, including 25.2% of those under age 18 and 11.2% of those age 65 or over.
